This Humanoid Robot Was Built to Protect Your Back
Lower back injuries are one of the most common causes of lost workdays across warehouses, factories, and shipyards in the US — and until now, most workplace solutions have focused on training and protective gear rather than the tools people actually work with.
A new humanoid robot called ergoCub, developed by researchers at the Italian Institute of Technology and the University of Manchester, takes a different approach. Rather than building the robot’s hardware first and adding software afterward, the team designed ergoCub’s body and its intelligence together from the start — with a human collaborator built into the system by design.
In practice, that means ergoCub reads its human partner’s posture and movement in real time, estimating the load on the lower back — the single most common site of workplace injury — and adjusting its own grip and force to take the strain off the person lifting alongside it. It’s also faster and more energy-efficient on its feet than its predecessor.
The underlying design approach is already being adapted into a modular platform aimed at manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare — meaning this kind of collaborative, injury-aware robotics could move from research lab to factory floor within the next few product cycles.
