Robotics greats: Top 10 greatest robot people

Top 10 greatest robot people

Hi Guys and welcome, I am Philip English from Robophil.com and on this video we are looking in to the Robot world greats!

These are the top 10 people who are currently developing & changing the Robotics industry.

Hi Guys, I’m Philip English from robophil.com, and welcome to the top 10 moves and shakers of the robot industry.

Fame and fortune has rarely been their immediate spur. A passion for changing the world through technology is the hallmark of the Robotics Greats. Sometimes they have invented new technology, sometimes they have transformed the way Robot technology is marketed or radically altering the way Robotics is perceived by society.

Whatever the case, the robotic industry is truly one where it is growing fast, and we are proud to pay tribute to these visionaries that are helping this robotics change our world for the better.

Rodney Brooks

Rodney Allen Brooks  is the a founder of iRobot and co-Founder, Chairman of Rethink Robotics. Born 30 December 1954, Rodney is know for popularizing the actionist approach to robotics. He received his PhD in 1981 and joined the faculty of MIT in 1984. Rodney founded iRobot at MIT in 1990 with the vision of making practical robots a reality. Brooks left MIT in 2008 to found a new company, Rethink Robotics and introduced his first collaborative robot Baxter™ in 2012, folled by  Sawyer in 2015. .0. Rodney continues to develop exciting new technologies that will further redefine what is possible with automation, robotics and human-machine interaction.

Dr. Cynthia Breazeal

Born November 15, 1967 in New Mexico is an Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at MIT . She is also the Founder & Chief Scientist at Jibo, Inc. The World’s First Social Robot for the Home. Cynthia received her B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1989, her S.M. in 1993 and her Sc.D. in 2000.Cynthia is best known for her work in social robotics and human–robot interaction. She first work on Cog, then developed the robot Kismet , folloed by Leonardo, Nexi & Tofu. .0. In 2014, Cynthia launched a campaign to crowdfund the development of the JIBO personal assistant robot.

Dr. Yoshiyuki Sankai

Born 10th September 1936, in Okayama, Japan, is a Japanese billionaire businessman and academic, the founder, president and CEO of the cyborg-robot maker Cyberdyne; and professor at the University of Tsukuba. Yoshiyuki Sankai received a PhD in engineering in 1987 and is the inventor, creator and driving force behind the advanced robotics, Robot Suit HAL® (Hybrid Assistive Limb ®) and various Cybernics, medical, care and welfare technologies.

Marc Raibert

Marc Raibert is an MIT professor who founded the CMU Leg Lab in 1980, moved it to MIT in 1986, and continued to direct it through 1995. He founded Boston Dynamics, a simulation and robotics company in 1992. Raibert developed the first self-balancing hopping robots, a significant step forward in robotics. Boston Dynamics,  famous for robots like BigDog, AlphaDog, Petman, Atlas, Cheetah, and WildCat, is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Google, Inc. The team seamlessly combines advanced analytical thinking with boots-in-the-mud practicality .0. They pride themselves in building machines that are both innovative and actually work.

Colin Angle

Colin Angle, born 1967, is an American businessman and is the co-founder of iRobot Corporation, maker of the Roomba vacuum cleaning robot and the PackBot military robot. In iRobot’s early days, Angle and his team designed the behavior-controlled rovers for NASA that led to the Sojourner exploring Mars in 1997. Before co-founding iRobot in 1990, Angle was president of Artificial Creatures Inc. Earlier in his career, Angle worked at MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, where he first teamed with iRobot co-founders Helen Greiner and Rodney Brooks. Colin guides the strategic direction of iRobot. One of the world’s leading authorities on mobile robots, Angle is an industry pioneer with more than two decades of experience.

Bruno Maisonnier

Bruno Maisonnier, founded Aldebaran Robotics in Paris July 8, 2005, which is the first French company to design humanoid robots.  In 2008 Aldebaran unveiled the first complete version of NAO, followed by the arrival of NAO Next Gen December 2011. Alderbarn has also unveiled their Romeo Robot and “Pepper” – the world’s first personal robot that reads emotions.  To date, nearly 400 Aldebaranians have contributed to the construction of the vision of the future with robots, with more than 7,000 NAOs sold around the world and Pepper available in Japan.

Hiroshi Ishiguro

Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro is director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory, part of the Department of Systems Innovation in the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka UniversityJapan. His notable development of the laboratory is the Actroid, a humanoid robot with lifelike appearance and visible behaviour such as facial movements. In robot development, Professor Ishiguro concentrates on the idea of making a robot that is as similar as possible to a live human being. Ishiguro has made an android that resembles him, called the Geminoid.

Elon Musk

Elon Reeve Musk, born June 28, 1971, is a South African-born Canadian-American business magnate, engineer, inventor and investor. He is the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors, chairman of SolarCity, and co-chairman of OpenAI. OpenAI is a non-profit artificial intelligence (AI) research company, that aims to carefully promote and develop open-source friendly AI in such a way as to benefit, rather than harm, humanity as a whole. The organization aims to “freely collaborate” with other institutions and researchers by making its patents and research open to the public..0.  The company is supported by over US$1 billion in commitments.

Larry Page & Sergey Brin

The last two robot shakers come together with Larry Page & Sergey Brin  both owners of Google!

Google went on a buying spree in 2014 and purchased eight robotics companies in a matter of months. These were Schaft Inc, Industrial Perception, Inc, Redwood Robotics, Meka Robotics, Holomini, Bot & Dolly, Boston Dynamics, DeepMind Technologies. This list covers smart AI, disaster relief robots, and a four-legged robot that can run almost 30 mph.

Page & Brin purchased these company’s,  as robotics are becoming increasingly data driven, operating based on sensors and algorithms. Google is a company that has made data and algorithms its business, so it’s a logical step for a company that values innovation as highly as Google does.

Regardless of what Google is going to do with these companies, it shows how Google will help drive innovation through the robot & robotics industry.
