Hi guys and welcome to my weekly robot update. This is where I do a round up of what’s going on in the robot news around the world. Â So stay tuned!
Hi guys! I’m Philip English of RoboPhil.com. Welcome to the robot weekly update number three!
Autonomous Retail Service Robot. Lowe’s Innovation Labs is an institution of Autonomous Retail Service Robot (ARSR) technology. To amplify the shopping experience for customers and employees. the concept will debut at the end of 2014 when two OSHbot retail service robots will be installed in an Orchard Supply Hardware in midtown San Jose. On board this retail service robots, you have Natural Language Processing, Autonomous Store of Navigation, Real Time Production Information, 3D scanning, Remote connectivity, Inventory management and Collision avoidance.
Standing 5 ft high and weighing 85 lb, the OSHbot looks like a white pillar with a couple of flat screens stuck on front and back. In its “head” is a 3D scanner that can detect and identify a human body standing in front of it and a smart laser sensor, along with a second in the base, for collision avoidance.
To tackle the task at hand, the robot features wireless networking, voice recognition, product information and location, inventory integration and design prototyping. When first turned on it can spend an evening roaming the store while using the scanning technology created for the Lowe’s Holoroom home improvement simulator to build up a map for autonomous navigation. In addition, its 3D camera can identify objects for customers and help locate them.
Lowe’s points out that the OSHbot provides information in real time about products and inventory and, being, a sales robot, pushes store promotions. It speaks several languages and can connect to live employees if enquiries are beyond the robot’s ability. It can also help with inventory management and allow employees to communicate between stores.
Penguin-bot. Meet Penguin-bot. A remote-controlled robot disguised as penguins could reduce stress to wild animals during behavioral research. A group of European scientists working together with a UK wildlife filmmaker have developed a remote-controlled robot rover disguised as a penguin in order to intimately study colonies of shy Emperor penguins in Adélie Land, Antarctica. Sending a robot penguin owns a scan equipment causes far less stress to the actual penguins than they feel when being observed by humans. When approached by humans, a penguin’s heart rate increases with an average of 35 beats per minute – a sign that indicates stress. Therefore, the researchers decided to disguise the robot rover as a baby penguin. the penguin rover helps to get close enough to scan the migratory birds. It took five different versions to train a chick that the penguins are not afraid of. The birds’ stress levels promises so much that the penguin even took the robot baby under their wings.
A recent exhibition, ABB Robotics had two of their robots doing Katana sword fighting.ABB is a global leader in power and automation technologies. Based in Zurich, Switzerland, the company employs 145,000 people and operates in approximately 100 countries. The firm’s shares are traded on the stock exchanges of Zurich, Stockholm and New York.
ABB’s business is comprised of five divisions that are in turn organized in relation to the customers and industries they serve.
The group is particularly proud of its record for innovation – widely recognized through countless awards and scientific accolades. Many of the technologies we take for granted today, from ultra efficient high-voltage direct current power transmission to a revolutionary approach to ship propulsion, were developed or commercialized by ABB.
Today ABB is the largest supplier of industrial motors and drives, the largest provider of generators to the wind industry and the largest supplier of power grids in the world.
