AILA by DFKI Bremen Robot Review

Welcome, and on this video we are doing product review for the AILA, by DFKI Bremen! So if you want to see how this lady robot is help us develop futuristic scenario’s on the international space station, then please stay tuned!

Hi Guys, I’m Philip English from robophil.com, now on this video we are looking in to the AILA the German Female Robot– by DFKI Bremen!

AILA is a mobile dual-arm robot system developed as a research platform for investigating aspects of the multidisciplinary area of mobile manipulation. Mobility, perception, manipulation and, primarily, the use of all these subareas within a single system that is able to perceive and understand its environment, move around, manipulate, learn about objects and deal with unstructured and uncertain environments is the goal of this research area.

AILA has 32 degrees of freedom, including 7-DOF arms, 4-DOF torso, 2-DOF head, and a mobile base equipped with six wheels, each of them with two degrees of freedom. The primary design goal was to achieve a lightweight arm
construction with a payload-to-weight ratio greater than one. Besides, an adjustable body the robot should sustain the dual-arm system providing an extended workspace. The robot is 170 cm tall with a movable torso and mobility provided by means of a wheel based mobile base. The system is not only controlled on a planned basis, but rather can also respond to external stimuli. Light contact with objects or humans show her where her freedom of action is limited. In this way, she can work together with humans and can always adjust to a changing environment. The necessary hardware for the computations is fully integrated in the robot’s body. This feature permits flexible deployment of the robot in any room.

The current focus of scientific effort is on AILA’s learning skills: future plans call for a learning platform to enable the robot to mimic and store the human movements of the upper body, arms, and hands. In the event that AILA encounters some unforeseeable task that she cannot solve on her own, human help is available remotely from afar. The operator simply performs the required movement in the lab as so called motion-tracking cameras record the human operator’s movements. The system then adopts these movements. The learning platform
automatically separates the motion into individual segments. The sequence is reproduced and tested in a simulation and then transmitted to the female robot. Learning methods, planning techniques, and reflexes are being integrated in a behavioral-based software architecture. The architecture controls the performance of the task at hand, while at the same time allowing for the appropriate reactions to sudden changes in the surroundings. These are “perceived” through various sensors.
